Labour Mayor Shortchanges Sutton
If you live in Sutton, you pay the same Council Tax to the London Mayor as all other Londoners, but official figures show that you get very little in return.
People have long known that Labour Mayor Khan isn’t very interested in Outer London, but we now know just how little Sutton gets from City Hall.
The London Assembly Research Unit has studied how the London Mayor spends his budget and reported in detail where it’s spent and on what. The results are published in a 34 page report: Mapping The Mayor’s Strategies: An Analysis Of The Mayor Of London’s Strategic Policy and Spending Priorities.
The report shows that Sutton gets less money from the London Mayor than any other London borough, in fact less than half of the next lowest. The graph on page 11 of the report lays bare the Mayor’s priorities - pumping money into favoured inner London boroughs, neglecting outer London and especially Sutton.
Sutton has no Tube stops, no tram, no London Overground, and no Crossrail or Crossrail 2. The money earmarked for the Sutton Tramlink under the previous Conservative Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, was swept back into general funds when Labour Mayor Khan arrived, and if the Sutton Tramlink happens at all it might now just be a glorified bus.
People sometimes think that there’s no money being invested in Sutton because there just is no money full stop, but the graph above shows that the London Mayor has Billions of Pounds to invest. He is just choosing to spend it in other places.
Sutton more than anywhere desperately needs a Conservative London Mayor who understands outer London and is committed to investment here. As your representative in City Hall on the London Assembly, I will speak up for Sutton no matter who is the Mayor.
