Neil's City Hall Diary - 8 June 2022

Is the Police Complaints process fit for purpose? Today at the London Assembly we've been looking at the IOPC and police complaints process, and found that no one is happy.

The police themselves are especially unhappy at how long it takes to remove officers who are plainly unfit. They're then left looking like they're defending or covering up for those officers when in reality they are stuck in a slow process which the police themselves don't control.

Disappointingly, although the IOPC agreed back in March to come to today's meeting, at the last minute they refused. So today we could only quiz the Met Police and the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime. We will be repeating the invitation to IOPC and expect to see them in the near future, because we need to hear from them, too. In particular, we need to understand from them how the process to remove plainly unfit officers can be sped up.
